A Masala Chai Recipe For Making Cookies

If you have a sweet tooth but want a healthier alternative, incorporating masala chai into desserts might not be the first thing you think of. The flavors of masala chai are all thanks to the blend of healthy spices and herbs that on their own would be an unlikely ingredient in any type of dessert. But together, they can create the perfect blend of sweet and spicy all rolled into the perfect cookie!

Cookies’ essential ingredients include sugar, butter, flour, and eggs. While these ingredients create the perfect delicious dessert, there aren’t a lot of health benefits to it. Every once in a while, we all crave something sweet, especially after a savory meal. However, it’s also important to take your health into account, otherwise, you’ll be downing cookies purely made of sugar and butter that aren’t always the best for you to consume.

Our special masala chai cookie recipe makes use of Chai Up’s Masala Chai Powder Mix which makes it easy for you to incorporate it into almost any dessert. Whether it’s cookies, bread, or other pastries, Chai Up’s Powder Mix is easy to add to any dough or batter!

The Essential Masala Chai Spices

Chai Up’s Masala powder mix uses all the best ingredients that make our cookie recipe the best healthy dessert alternative. Everyone loves cookies but it doesn’t always have the best ingredients since it’s mostly sugar and butter. Yes, they taste great, but it’s not always the best option to serve your family.

Every masala chai recipe is different but Chai Up made sure to use the best of the best. Here are all the ingredients in Chai Up’s masala chai spice mix that make it the greatest addition to your newest cookie recipe. You can now enjoy desserts and give in to your sweet tooth as much as you’d like because of these

1. Cloves

Cloves have amazing nutrients like healthy fibers, vitamins, and minerals that you wouldn’t think to add to any dessert. According to Healthline, one of the cloves’ essential minerals is manganese which is essential for maintaining great brain function and building strong bones.

2. Green Cardamom Seeds

Cardamom is an herb that is used to spice up foods and it’s another unlikely ingredient for a dessert. But the health benefits of cardamom far outweigh the taste you’re used to for desserts. And don’t say no until you haven’t tried it! Cardamom is great for addressing digestion problems, even heartburn, some intestinal spasms, intestinal gas problems, and irritable bowel syndrome. Cardamom can also help you regain a loss of appetite.

3. Basil

Fresh basil is commonly used in savory dishes across different cuisines. In desserts? Not so much. The problem with most desserts is that too much of it can increase blood sugar levels. One of the best benefits of basil is that it can actually reduce blood sugar levels and help people with diabetes. Basil is one of the most popular Ayurvedic herbs and has been used for healing for centuries. It’s probably best to start adding it not only to regular foods but even desserts!

4. Ajwain

Ajwan, also known as carom or Bishop weed, is a feathery shrub leaf that has been used for its medicinal properties in many parts of the world. In Afghanistan, ajwain seeds are added to bread and biscuits for added aroma and taste so it's not the most far-fetched ingredient to add to your cookies. Ajwain is known for its healing properties and is an excellent source of antioxidants. Its seeds contain antibacterial and antifungal properties that help fight bacteria.

5. Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds are one of the chai tea ingredients that would also be one of the last things you would ever think to add to a dessert.

6. Ginger Powder

Another one of the chai tea ingredients that is an unlikely cookie ingredient is ginger powder.  Ginger has many amazing health benefits ranging from improving your immunity, alleviating PMS symptoms, reducing pain, aiding in weight loss, and better digestion. John Hopkins Medicine also lists nausea relief, helping with morning sickness due to pregnancy, and helping with constipation as other health benefits of ginger.

7. Cinnamon

Unlike the other spices that are added in Chai Up’s Masala Chai powder mix, cinnamon isn’t the most unlikely ingredient that is normally added to baked goods and desserts. Not only is cinnamon the perfect taste of sweet and slightly spiced, but it also has powerful medicinal properties. Cinnamon has always been regarded as a valuable and rare spice that it was even gifted to kings in Ancient Egypt. Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

8. Oregano

Oregano is a staple ingredient in masala chai recipes, and while you won’t think to add it alone in sweet pastries or desserts, once you find out its benefits, you might just want to! Oregano is used for reducing viral infections, decreasing inflammation, and fighting bacteria.

9. Licorice Plant

Licorice is one of the unique chai tea ingredients that Chai Up has added to their powder masala chai mix. Licorice is usually added as a sweetener in candies, beverages, and even medicine. Licorice is not just used in our chai recipe for taste, but also for health benefits. Licorice has been proven to treat ulcers and prevent them from coming back. It’s also a great plant that can treat viruses and get rid of bacteria.

How To Make Masala Chai Cookies Using Chai Up’s Masala Chai Blend

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 325° degrees.
  2. Combine the sugar, flour, Chai Up Masala Powder Mix, and cold butter in a food processor. Use the pulse option until the dough mixture starts to clump up.
  3. Transfer the cookie mixture onto a sheet of parchment paper and knead it into a disk. Add another sheet of parchment paper on top and roll the dough until it's ⅛-inch thick.
  4. Cut the dough using a 2-inch cookie cutter. On an ungreased cookie sheet, place the cookie cutouts one inch apart.
  5. Bake the cookies for 15 to 20 minutes or until they become a light golden brown color.
  6. Place the cookies on a wire rack until cool.
  7. To make the glaze, microwave the heavy cream in a bowl for about 15 seconds. Add the chocolate chips or white chocolate chips and stir in with the cream until it's all melted.
  8. Spread a thin layer of the chocolate-cream glaze over the. You can also use both white chocolate and chocolate chips and make separate ganaches to create a marble-effect glaze.
  9. Make sure the cookies have cooled down a bit before adding the glaze so you’re not left with a gooey glaze. You want to wait until the glaze solidifies a bit on top of the cookie so it doesn’t stick to your fingers while you eat it!
  10. Enjoy your masala chai cookies with a hot cup of chai!
